Our entire class walked single file through Ludhiana streets as the Class VI students were taken to the cinema hall to watch the Dilip Kumar starrer Naya Daur. That was 1976. It was the day I awakened towards the world of cinema. Years later, as I watched Robert Donat's captivating performance in The Magic Box, I could easily empathise with those responsible for making pictures move. I had refused to walk back to the school in single-file after Naya Daur. My secret name for a movie theatre has always been The Magic Box. No, I don't lend respect to multiplexes with that name. That world is gone. Perhaps for ever.
